Journey to the Tobacco Shop on the Corner
角の煙草屋までの旅(9)
カメラ毎日 1980
by
須田一政╱Issei SUDA
Serialised in Camera Mainichi in 1980 and later published by Place M in 2011, Issei Suda’s Journey to the Tobacco Shop on the Corner turns a few-hundred-metre radius around a hospital into a complete voyage. Switching from his hallmark 6×6 to a Leica 35mm, Suda compresses his theatre-trained sense of the uncanny into the smallest unit of travel—the everyday street. The original magazine run was accompanied by short texts by Reiko Masuda; the photobook leaves the images to speak alone, marking a quiet pivot in Suda’s oeuvre.
Update: We’ve archived Reiko Masuda’s full essay from the Camera Mainichi serialization in the fofofoto Members-Only area—now available in Japanese (original) + English + Traditional Chinese.
