Aichi Mandala
A quietly powerful exhibition catalogue tracing the formative years of Shomei Tomatsu, one of the central figures of postwar Japanese photography. Made for the 2006 exhibition at Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, this volume gathers early monochrome works photographed around Aichi from the 1950s to the mid-1960s: Nagoya streets, Seto craft culture, flood-stricken Issiki-cho, petrochemical landscapes, textile towns, children, workers, rooms, bodies, and traces of a rapidly changing Japan.
The book is especially valuable for readers interested in the origins of Tomatsu’s visual language. Before the celebrated trajectories of Nagasaki, Okinawa, and Occupation, these Aichi works show how his eye formed through local experience, social rupture, and the material textures of everyday life.
Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art / The Chunichi Shimbun / 2006 / 22.5 x 29.0 cm / 269 pp. / Monochrome
