Published by Soshisha in 2007, Hiroh Kikai's Tokyo Mutan, also titled Labyrinthos, brings together black-and-white photographs of Tokyo and twenty-one prose pieces. Known for his sustained attention to ordinary people and their surroundings, Kikai turns his camera toward the city as an inhabited landscape. The photographs move through embankments, narrow streets, aging apartment buildings, commercial facades, railway structures and unexpected architectural passages. Human figures occasionally enter the frame, yet their presence is often felt through the spaces they occupy and the traces they leave behind. A group gathered beside a river, a shuttered storefront or a quiet corner between buildings becomes an invitation to consider the lives unfolding beyond the photograph. The images carry individual location and date captions, bringing observations from different years into a shared sequence. Kikai's accompanying essays, revised from writings originally published in the Web Soshi series Tokyo Polka, introduce another rhythm of recollection and wandering. Photography and language together explore the subtle movement between direct observation, remembered experience and the imagination of an unseen story.
