<Description>

Published by Bijutsu Shuppan-sha in 1988, Shanghai Memorandum is photographer Michio Nakagawa's examination of a city carrying several histories within its streets. Nakagawa, who studied and worked with Takuma Nakahira before developing a long practice centred on architecture, cities and human activity, approached Shanghai through repeated visits over many years. The book brings together black-and-white photographs of streets, bicycles, building facades, architectural details, crowded public spaces and quieter interiors. Surviving structures from Shanghai's former international settlements appear alongside the ordinary movements of its contemporary inhabitants. Weathered surfaces, intersecting lines, commercial signs and people moving through the frame reveal a city in which different historical periods remain physically entangled. Nakagawa's compositions frequently emphasize relationships between the built environment and those passing through it. Elevated viewpoints expose the geometry of roads and architecture, while closer observations recover gestures and details that might disappear in a broader urban panorama. Across the book, photographs and written passages encourage attention to how a city's history becomes visible through its everyday life. Released during the period of China's reform and opening, Shanghai Memorandum also preserves a particular moment before the city's later large-scale redevelopment. Its measured photographic language allows architecture, human presence and historical memory to coexist within a reflective account of urban change.

<介紹>
