TOKYO 1985╱Shoshi Okamoto
A quiet, sharply observed portrait of Tokyo on the edge of the bubble years, this hardcover photobook gathers Shoshi Okamoto’s 1985 street photographs into a restrained and beautifully produced volume. Shot while Okamoto was studying at Tokyo Photographic College, the work moves through phone booths, shopfronts, residential lanes, bicycle-filled streets and passing figures with the calm attention of a long walk.
The images were left unpublished for more than thirty years before being rediscovered, giving the book the feeling of a delayed time capsule. With an afterword by Daido Moriyama, it is a subtle record of everyday Tokyo, where ordinary surfaces become historical memory.
