<Description>

First published by Soshisha in July 1982, We Have No Place to Be: Teenagers in a Troubled World is an early photographic work by Joji Hashiguchi. Following his recognition for the 1981 Taiyo Prize-winning series Shisen, Hashiguchi extended his attention from the young people gathering in Tokyo's streets to youth communities across several international cities. The photographs were made in Liverpool, London, Nuremberg, West Berlin, New York and Tokyo during the early 1980s. Their subjects include young people living at the margins of conventional social expectations, often facing unemployment, estrangement or uncertain futures. Leather jackets, closely cropped hair, tattoos, improvised gatherings and urban streets form a striking visual language, while the expressions of the individuals remain central to the work. Hashiguchi's black-and-white photographs frequently occupy full spreads, bringing the reader physically close to faces, gestures and encounters. Accompanying texts introduce the young people's circumstances and the photographer's own engagement with their lives. The work emerged amid recession and youth unemployment in Britain, the political division of Germany and changing social conditions in Japan and the United States. The result is a direct and sensitive record of a generation searching for space, recognition and belonging. Through its combination of intimate portraiture and documentary observation, the book established concerns that would continue throughout Hashiguchi's photographic career.

<介紹>
