Set in the boom of post-1972 cultural exchange, a magazine like Asahi Camera worked as a bridge. Haruo Tomiyama applies a news-honed, clear eye so roles, masks and formations stay legible; Kohei Sugiura turns that stage grammar into a reading rhythm rooted in his study of Asian iconography. The same duo then extended the project in Heibonsha’s two-volume Kyogeki, with a full Sun Wukong volume, giving the topic both immediacy and structure.
